Movie premieres, special film maker and celebrity guests and a handful of genre classics on display and we’ve partnered with the BFI to present some of our special screenings as part of their country wide Gothic season.
Now in its fifth year, Grimmfest has quickly become the premiere UK festival of genre film outside of London, and this year is our biggest yet!
3 Venues… 5 days… 36 films!
Grimmfest 2013 will launch on October 2nd with a special preview night at the spectacular 1200-seater Art Deco Super Cinema, Stockport Plaza. This will feature a screening of the fully-restored 40th Anniversary rerelease of cult classic THE WICKER MAN and Q&A with the film’s director Robin Hardy, A special preview of the CHILD’S PLAY reboot CURSE OF CHUCKY (TBC), which is wowing horror audiences at international festivals already, and, in celebration of the Bicentennial of a certain book of fairy tales by the festival’s illustrious namesakes, the Brothers Grimm, the black-hearted stoner comedy HANSEL AND GRETEL GET BAKED. There will also be the world premiere of the short film RADIO SILENCE by Mat Johns, whose previous short, RUN was something of an internet sensation.
Our Gala opening night features two brand new UK horrors from female horror producer who’s making waves, Jennifer Handorf, with THE BORDERLANDS directed by first timer Elliot Goldner and CRAZY FOR YOU, directed by James Moran (Zombies Vs Cockneys, Severance) and starring Arthur Darvill (Dr Who) and Hanna Tointon (The Inbetweeners, The Hour). Members of the cast and crew from both movies will be with us on the night.
Further festival highlights will include a make-up workshop and Q&A with SFX maestro Shaune Harrison, whose work was most recently showcased in WORLD WAR Z. A HELLRAISER screening with original cast in attendance. The English premiere of surreal Southern Gothic shocker JUGFACE from the producers of  the 2011 horror hit THE WOMAN. European premieres include; the chilling coming of age story FOUND, brilliantly tense German serial killer thriller ON AIR, and the return of iconic genre legend Barbara Steele in THE BUTTERFLY ROOM.
There will also be regional premieres for the visceral Israeli revenge thriller BIG BAD WOLVES, scatological zombie comedy STALLED, Don Coscarelli’s (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep) bonkers sci-fi horror JOHN DIES AT THE END and Xan Cassavetes’ art house vampires in KISS OF THE DAMNED .
Other regional premieres include festival favourites like WITHER, being described as a Nordic EvilDead and THE HUMAN RACE, kinda Battle Royal but even weirder!
We’ve a fine selection of new shorts interspersed throughout the festival, including Alfie Allen in Paul Davis’s darkly funny THE BODY, Dominic Brunt’s (Before Dawn, Emmerdale) wartime shocker, SHELL SHOCKED and Nick Gillespie’s post apocalyptic SAMUEL AND EMILY VS. THE WORLD.
THE MACHINE a new UK sci-fi thriller that’s being compared to BLADE RUNNER and has lit up festivals such as Fantasia and Tribeca this year, is our closing night movie.
The festival also boasts its very own “fringe”, which will feature some of the more left-field, challenging, independent films of the festival. These will include the UK premieres of HOUSE OF 100 EYES, a gruelling social satire about a suburban couple struggling to make a snuff movie, THANATOMORPHOSE, a harrowing study of mental and physical decay, and TO JENNIFER, a found-footage road movie into the heart of psychological darkness from James Cullen Bressack, whose previous, debut, feature was one of the most controversial talking points of last year’s festival.
We also premiere the icy home invasion thriller HOME SWEET HOME from the French director of MUTANTS, the truly twisted MODUS ANOMOLI from Indonesia, a documentary with a difference, MY AMITYVILLE HORROR and a brace of social media themed shockers, SMILEY and ANTISOCIAL.
After the launch on October 2nd at Stockport Plaza, Grimmfest 2013 will continue from October 3rd – 6th, at the Dancehouse Theatre, and the Lass O’Gowrie, Manchester.
